    Favourite Quotations

What are your favourite quotes from the whole SoA series? They can be funny, heart warming, of extreme importance to the series, whatever.

I don't know if I can decide what my favourite important or heart warming might be, but I always found the lines where when the Dowager Empress and her son die and Rhapsody and Achmed have the exact same reaction funny. "Did they get a new chef?" (Something to that effect anyhow) Also, I know it is horrible and evil because that is how Esten the guildmistress is, but her reaction to finding out that the Shanouin priestess she is having killed is pregnant is so classicly devious and yet secretly funny. "No extra delivery charge for the baby then."

And of course, I love the Achmed line that crops up every so often, "come with me if you want to live."

    Anyone else care to share?

    Re: Favourite Quotations

    My favorite quotes from Prophecy:

The Kirsdarkenvar, master of the element of water, one of the most agile men in all of Roland, tripped and plunged face-first into the Tar'afel.  (Prophecy, 101)

(Rhapsody speaking)  "First, I don't plan to marry anyway...[text omitted]...Second, I'm not afraid of time differences...[text omitted]...And, of course, since you know I am Achmed's contemporary, there's always him.  Grunthor, of course, is out of the question."
Ashe's voice contained a note of horror.  "There's always Achmed for what?"  (Prophecy, 90)

(Ashe speaking)  "You didn't mean what you said earlier, did you?  About Achmed?"
She looked at him foggily.  "What?"
"You would never, well, mate with Achmed, would you?"  [text omitted]
"Frankly, it's none of your concern."  (Prophecy, 92-3)

    My favorite quotes from Elegy:

one for whom he felt the damnable emotion of love, denied, confused, and forbidden as it was.
(Elegy, 348)  (and so far, it's my favorite quote out of the entire series because the thought of confident, strong Achmed being unsure about the forbidden love he feels for Rhapsody just makes me all mushy inside--in a very good way!)

"What in the name of every ridiculous evil god that never existed happened here?" An ugly light came into the giant Sergeant's amber eyes.
"Birthday party got a little out o' hand, sir." (Elegy, 14)

"I don't envy Rhapsody her homecoming," Achmed said, pulling his cloak around him and preparing to start out into the building storm. Grunthor cleared his throat as he opened the door.
"Yeah, well, sir, Oi don't especially envy you yours, either." The Bolg king's eyes narrowed as he glanced back over his shoulder.
        "What now?"
"    Well, if ya thought that 'birthday party' we had while you were gone the last time left a mess, wait until ya see the one that's waiting for you when you get back this time, sir."
        Achmed sighed in annoyance. "Hrekin."
"Actually, sir, that's right. And lots of it." (Elegy, 426-27)

    Re: Favourite Quotations

I forget what context this quote is from but Achmed and Rhapsody are in the dark, by where the earth child is in Destiny and then when she wakes up Achmed starts going on about them being two sides of the same coin.  And right before Rhapsody leaves (for an extended period of time) she asks him, "what have you really been trying to tell me?"

And then Achmed goes, "Don't die."

When you translate those two words from Achmed speak into English, I think it means...  I love you...  I love you so much...  I don't like Ashe, I think you should drop him and hook up with me...  Oh yah, and i'm sorry about you know... that whole dragging you through the earth for a hundred years thing...

*laughs* I think you have it just about right there Sam I am ^.o

I belive I've said this before, but my favorite (funny) quote from Rhapsody is when Rhapsody meets Melisande and young Gwydion and Gwydion asks her if she'd be his mother.  Stephen says, "I'll go throw myself from the balcony now" or something to that effect.  I almost died. ^^

    Re: Favourite Quotations

From TAK Rhapsody thinks this to herself, and I found it halarious: "And he would have had no compunction about killing every Barney in the town if he had to.  Achmed can pour his own ale."

    Re: Favourite Quotations

You know, mel, I think that was my favorite line in TAK.  And for some reason I think that that one line "Achmed can pour his own ale" sums up who Achmed is in some strange way.
"All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream."
    ~Edgar Allan Poe
"Darest thou now O Soul, Walk out with me toward the unknown region, Where neither ground is for feet Nor any path to follow."
    ~Walt Whitman

    Re: Favourite Quotations

I'm pretty sure I've seen the avatar, Krinsel. Is it where Achmed's looking really forlorn, kind of looking up at the sky, perhaps saying 'please save me All-God from the hideous meal that is mutton'?

If so, I've seen it! Lol! It's hilarious!

And Res, I believe the quote your looking for is just after young Gwydion says 'Don't you like boys?'.

'If anyone needs me, I'll be in the Great Hall, jumping off the balcony."

    Re: Favourite Quotations

I like the line that Grunthor says during that scene:  "My ol' man always said that children are the only thing that keeps a man from livin' forever, because they make 'im want to die o' mortification at least once a day."
"All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream."

    Achmed's Lover wrote:

He wasn't ugly, at least in her estimation.  There was a strange beauty to his face, in fact; instead of a face that reflected atrocity, she saw a distracted god's unfinished work.

I just like the line "god's unfinished work" when it was used to describe Achmed.  So now when someone complains about the trash not being taken out, or the smell coming from the clump of unclean laundry, or the growing pile of unwashed dishes, I can just say, "Hey man, take it easy, that's just god's unfinshed work."

To which my older brother would probably reply, "Well, "god" better get his a** in gear or he's gonna have hell to pay."

Haha, I was just thinking about that quote situation yesterday when contemplating how tall Rhapsody is supposed to be. I find it quite funny.

    Re: Favourite Quotations

I couldn't quite remember this one earlier, but now I have my book beside me and I can get it right. It's from Prophecy.
Oelendra says to Rhapsody after she has Rhapsody translate what the word Illiachenva'ar actualy means,(Which BTW is Bringer of light into a dark place, or from one.)
"So now do you understand what it means to be the Illiachenva'ar?" To which Rhapsody replies,
"I'm to be a lamp lighter?"

Or one of my other favorites, also from Prophecy. Not exactly a quote, but the part when Oelendra smashes the lute and throws it into the fire. Then this little conversation plays out between Rhapsody and Oelendra.

"" What in the name of the One-God is the matter with you?" She gestured at the fireplace.
"That instrument was priceless! It was a gift from Elynsynos, filled with lore and history. And now it's-"
" 'Tis going to keep the room warm."

    Re: Favourite Quotations

Requiem for the Sun, page 274, Achmed's response to the Sorbold soldier that informed him of the deaths of the Empress and Crown Prince of Sorbold:
"What happened? Did they hire a new chef?"
And then continued on page 279 when Rhapsody is informed of the same thing:
"How awful, did they get a new chef recently?"

I had to put the book down at this point because I was laughing so hard, remembering the quote from earlier about Achmed and Rhapsody being two sides of the same coin. This confirmed that statement.

    Re: Favourite Quotations

I once heard a tale involving an unflattering dress, a fairly slim woman, and how truth is not always immediately appreciated when those two things are concerned.  I was reminded of that story when I came across this SOA quote.

“Just because someone is rude and unreasonable does not mean he’s wrong.”  ~  Jal’asee (referring to Achmed) from Elegy of a Lost Star

    Re: Favourite Quotations

“Merei Aria.  Evet hira, Rhapsody.”  (Star of the Sea; I have found my guiding star.  It is you, Rhapsody.)  ~  Ashe

I guess it’s true that saying something in another language always makes it sound more romantic.
