They gave it the cleverest little preview. I got 'Free time' for TS2 today and a gift pc gets delivered to your sims house. It's normal ... apart from in the section where you play games they have 'The Sims 3' it was a very nice and unexpected surprise to get such a nifty little preview.

    Re: The Sims 3

    More info:

    Hello,

My name is Ben and I’m an Executive Producer on The Sims 3. The last few years have been exciting for me personally. Since joining The Sims Label at EA, I’ve had the opportunity to work on dream projects such as The Sims 2 Pets, and The Sims 2 Castaway. However, things are about to get very exciting and I’m so happy to be sharing this news with you.

In the very near future, we are going to announce the first details of The Sims 3. As you can imagine, The Sims 3 development team is very excited because we have been working on the game for the past few years. Like you, we are all fans of The Sims and we can’t wait to talk to you about the innovations in The Sims 3. We know that there are so many expectations for this game. The Sims 3 team has been quietly listening to the community and incorporating suggestions to make this the best possible game. Many of our team members worked on The Sims and The Sims 2, so trust me, you are in good hands. We hope that you’ll be impressed by what we’re working on for The Sims 3.

What is The Sims 3? Very shortly, you’ll see magazine articles, websites and interviews on this subject. However, we want to share the announcement news with you first.

When the team first started thinking about what The Sims 3 could be, we asked ourselves the following question. What if you had to live your whole life in one location … and then one day, suddenly, you could step outside and go anywhere in the whole neighborhood?

The first thing you’ll notice about The Sims 3 is that the Sims now live in a completely seamless, living neighborhood. This means that they can walk next door, walk down the street, drive to the center of town, stroll through the park, and explore everything without ever encountering a load screen.
Wherever you go in your town, you will see other Sims going about their daily lives. You’ll discover new things about the community that your Sims live in, and you will have the chance to participate whenever and wherever you like. As a player, this is an incredible innovation for me because now I can see what my neighbors are up to all of the time and go interact with them. Or if I am feeling devious I can peek through the window and spy on their every move. I can even shoot across town to see what the other families in my town are doing, any time of day or night. It’s an entirely new way to play with your Sims!

The second aspect of The Sims 3 that always impresses me is our completely reinvented and realistic Create a Sim. In The Sims 3, you have so much freedom to create the Sims that you want to make, yet it’s easy and fun. In the coming weeks, we will have some screenshots on our website that show you a small glimpse of what is possible with Create a Sim. The Sims can look like anyone you imagine. I’ve made my friends, my great grandpa, and many other important people from my life. We also have a new realistic personality system called Traits that allows you to determine the personality of every Sim. There are dozens of Traits that you can assign to your Sims. Every Trait will change the way that your Sims feel, think and behave in the game. You can choose several traits for your Sims, so it’s really possible to make any character that you can imagine and they will come to life in The Sims 3. Now imagine placing these unique personalities into your very own “Petri-dish” that is the new seamless, living neighborhood.

The third thing that I really want to share with you about The Sims 3 is that everyone will be able to customize the appearance of everything, right in the game: This is true for furniture, walls, floors, fashion, hair, and so much more. You will be able to customize the colors or patterns and apply them to everything (this is great for me in particular, as I am colorblind). You can make everything match, clash, or coordinate. It is so easy and fast, and it is incredibly powerful. What is really exciting is that you won’t need developer tools to make big visual changes to the game. We will be giving you a small taste of how this works on the website. However, I cannot wait to show you how fun this feature is when we have the final user interface in the game. The real power of this feature will be obvious when you get your hands on it. Fans of The Sims already make amazing things, and now it will be so much easier for to make and share creations.

While I have met many of you at fan events, I look forward to sharing more with you about The Sims 3 as we develop the game leading up to launch.

There is so much more that I would love to tell you about but we’ll save that for future emails. Please stay tuned.

    Talk to you soon!

    Is this an MMO now?

I don't think they would go that way with mainstream sims - too many kids play it, even thought it's rated teen. Plus there's all the custom content that would be hard to 'share' but you never know... I'll stop playing if it turns into another Second Life.

Yeah you're probably right.  I enjoyed playing TSO though.  But it did get old pretty fast.

Too true Grunthor. I tried playing The Sims 2, and already it was a little too much. For now ill just stick to the PC The Sims Complete Collection. I can't see myself playing The Sims 3 since I don't have a PS3 or XBox 360.

    Re: The Sims 3

TS3 will be a PC game. They may create a version for the consoles but EA wouldn't put such a successful game into a limited format and using PC is as far as I know the only way to create and upload products to the game... that feature wont be changing anytime soon. It's one of the reasons the game is so popular.

TSO = The Sims Online which was a limited forray into an MMO. It was never really fully supported and despite many promises that it would be universally available; it never quite made it and just had a limited release in the US. TS2 however is excellent - it really built on the things people wanted from the original game.

I just hope EA don't mess up the game play in the same way they did with SimCity Societies - that bombed so badly and got such stinky reviews that I didn't buy it - and I'm a die-hard SimCity fan. The universal complaint was that it was too easy and that all the challenge was taken out of the game. I've read that they are looking at ways to make it harder in the future and will patch accordingly... but I think the damage has been done already.

    Re: The Sims 3

I was a beta tester for TSO (The Sims Online) and it was fun for a while.  Just like WOW they would release a patch and change the dynamics of everything.  I remember that for a while making and selling garden gnomes was the easiest way to make money so these huge gnome factories started popping up everywhere and there would be hundreds of people just standing around crafting gnomes all night.  The they nurfed gnomes and all of the people who invested in the gnome factories started losing money.  It was very frustrating.  I got sick of it after a while and didn't even get the game when it was finally released.

    Re: The Sims 3

    Well, thankfully TS3 wont be an MMO. There's a bit more about it here. I really liked;

'In Sims 3, events influence your Sim's mood. They might be angry for 24 hours because you let them wet themselves, or over the moon for a whole week because they got jiggy with the missus.' Big Smile [:D]

    and

'Sims have traits, not 'values'. You choose personal-ad style descriptions, like 'evil', 'playful' or 'paranoid'. "Developing your characters," Rod says, "is now about picking how you'd describe them rather than moving sliders".'

Oooo, that does sound fun. Okay, that's it. I'm getting TS3 when it comes out. Do you have to have the first two for it to work? I only have TS2 on PS2.

No, it will be totally stand alone in the same way the other Sims were. I read the magazine article on the new game and I must say it looks great... it will be a year or two before it's released though. Crying [:'(]

Oh my! I didn't know this existed!

I am getting a little annoyed, though, because with each stand-alone upgrade of the game, you have to buy the expansion packs all over again :(

    Re: The Sims 3

I've seen something on TS3 that I'm not sure I like: it appears that the game will be shipped with one 'hood. Period. You can save it in different time slots, sure, but it's still just the one hood. and while the idea of the neighborhood acting like one seamless lot is neat, I'm not sure I'm too keen on the idea of sims being born, aging, and dying without me there. All the customization looks great, but I might pass on this one.

    Re: The Sims 3

I'm not too worried about the neighbourhood being just one; I wonder if the expansions would add community neighbourhoods.

I do agree about not liking everyone continuing their lives elsewhere while you focus on one particular sim. I think Maxis have lost sight of the fact that simmers love to micro manage their sims. I hope you will be able to slow time down or suspend aging as you can now. That's important to me.

THEY CAN DIE WITHOUT YOU BEING THERE???!!! Oh no. I really don't like that idea at all.
