Do you know what is a really good movie?  Runaway Jury

Yes, it was just on TV, and yes, I just watched it.  But it made me realize that I really like John Cusack as an actor, and this is just a GREAT movie.

PS  madhatter:  NICE!!  Big Smile [:D]  One of my personal favorites:  My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father.  Prepare to die.

My Sis in law is a huge Reese Witherspoon fan too.  So much so that (although she denies this) she named her daughter after her.  So now I have an 11 month old niece named Reese.  I begged and I pleaded with my older Bro & his wifey to name their daughter Sansa, after my 3rd favorite (right behind Achmed & Rhapsody---and I couldn't ask for Rhapsody cause that sounds too much like a stripper) fantasy character Sansa Stark from George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones.

And in order to further my cause of having a niece named Sansa I made my Sis in law read the entire Song of Ice & Fire trilogy while she was on maternity leave.  I thought for sure this would do the trick, in fact I was all ready to send a baby pic of my future niece to the GRRM website where they have all the other Song of Ice & Fire namesakes. Well, things didn't go as I planned, it turns out that my Sis in law (although she loved the books) didn't care too much for the character of Sansa Stark.  In fact, her favorite character was Sansa's younger sister Arya Stark.  *sigh*  So a few weeks later as my dreams of having a living, breathing tribute to Sansa Stark crumbled into dust, a little girl named Reese was born...

In hindsight, I think I should've given her the Rhapsody trilogy instead and lobbied for the name of Emily.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  I understand what you mean, but I still think it's a really pretty name.

I think you might find this interesting.  It's the Most Poplar Baby Names in England and Wales for 2002 to 2006.  Guess which name makes the Top 10?  Wink [;)]  And Most Popular Girl Names in the US for 2006

And here, check out numbers 16 and 51.  Alright, I'm done with Google for about five more minutes....

If you like weird, "out there" movies, check out Donnie Darko.  The first time I watched it, I bawled my eyes out.  Be warned, though:  you probably won't understand it the first time through; it's really heavy and complicated.  I've seen it two or three times now, and I feel like I sort of understand the basic plot...I think it'll be one of my ongoing New Year's resolutions to understand this movie before I die...but I found this website which really helped!

Watched The Illusionist last night with the nieces and nephews over.  When it ended, the kids just kept saying what a great movie it was - I won't give anything away, but I thought it was really good.

My favourite movie at the moment that I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone in the world ever is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. There is a fair amount of swearing in it, so it's not exactly a G movie, but it is thoroughly hilarious.

KKBB is absolutely amazingly hilarious - kudos to you FernGully - I am also completely obsessed with the Illusionist as I saw it before it got distribution at an independent film festival (compliments of Dyansynos) - everyone should see this movie!

My Sis in law bought one of those Sansa brand mp3 players, so I guess that’s something.  And she has also (quite generously---she seems to think) offered to name her new family dog that she is getting either of the following names: Sansa, Rhapsody, Emily, or Amelia.

I’m not too sure how I feel about this.  She told me she planned on getting a mixed Lab Retriever (and acted as if proclaiming this was suppose to mean something to me).  To make things worse my niece is pretty darn cute(and I'm not just saying that).  *sigh*  To what might have been.  But back to this dog naming thing, that's going to be a tough decision.

I second Donnie Darko, as said by Achmed's Lover.

    -V for Vendetta
-Hard Candy (one of my all time favorite movies ever. It's Canadian indie though, so you Americans might have some trouble finding it. I couldn't recommend it more though.)
    -Moulin Rouge
    -Chicago
    -The Producers
    -Of course, The Princess Bride
    -Thank You For Smoking
    -About A Boy

Your niece named Reese is pretty darn cute?  Well, that's not a bad thing...(I mean, Reese Witherspoon is adorable, but I understand your disappointment about not having her named after a favorite character...)

So she's planning on naming her (presumably female) dog after a character??  Well, if you want the name to fit (think of a synonym for female dog) you might try Anwyn or Esten or the heartless, nameless (as of yet) mystery woman who broke Achmed's heart...

LOL  Anyway, you should create a new thread for this topic (since it's not really about movies anymore) and I, for one, am interested in hearing what happens next in the Saga of the Naming  Wink [;)]

Wow, that means you actually do (non SOA) research for your posts; I’m very impressed.  But that only makes parenting my posts harder.  Now my little posts are jealous of your posts.  They keep bugging me, “Achmed’s Lover’s posts have research in them; I want some research too.”

Oh, (and back on topic) I recommend The Thirteenth Warrior staring Antonio Banderas; I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

I'm starting to feel like Mandella from 10 Things I Hate About You  (GREAT movie, btw, if you haven't seen it)

    Mandella:  Have you seen him?
    Kat:  Who?
Mandella:  William [Shakespeare]. He asked me to meet him here.
Kat:  Oh Mandella, please tell me you haven't progressed to full-on hallucinations.

    Re: Movie/DVD recommendations!

Has anyone said The Notebook? I thought it was great, and I normally feel vaguely sick after sappy love story type movies. But this on was very well done!!

Also, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood was very good, as was Fried Green Tomatoes (which actually links back to the name thing, as one of the character shares the same name as my grandmother, though I can't tell you which one...) and Return to Me, another love story that I actually liked, along with As Good As It Gets. One of the best movie lines ever come from that movie! *goes to quotes thread*

    Re: Movie/DVD recommendations!

Those are great duvet day movies Val. Smile [:)] I would add In Her Shoes to that list too. My favourite quote from As Good As It Gets  was 'sell crazy somewhere else, we're all stocked up here.' Priceless. Big Smile [:D]

    My must have movies are:

    Wonder Boys

    Scanner Darkly

    Little Miss Sunshine

    Team America

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

    Wizard of Oz

Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away

Pretty much any 40's / 50's musical - but High Society, White Christmas and Gentlermen Prefer Blondes are particular favourites. The same for most Hitchcock movies. I like a lot of other films too; 6th Sense, Usual Suspects , LA Confidential - but they tend to be great the first time, but you don't get so much out of them when you see them again.

    Re: Movie/DVD recommendations!

Watched Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightly and it was awesome.  Who’d have thought that Jane Austin was the one that originally came up with all those cool one-liners.  My sis in law insisted that the A&E version was superior to the Keira Knightly version and tried to make me watch her DVDs, but when I found out it was a “bajillion” hours long I said, “No way.”

My favorite kind of movie is when there is a sad girl in the beginning of the movie and by the end of that movie that very same girl becomes a happy girl.  It helps if that girl is pretty (like Rachel Leigh Cook in She’s All That).  But it is not necessary; she can be unsightly too (like Rachel Leigh Cook with glasses and a pony tail in She’s All That).

What??!  The A&E version (or BBC to be more technical) is amazing!  And it's only 5 hours.  Just don't ask me how I know that off the top of my head. Big Smile [:D]

    Re: Movie/DVD recommendations!

Since I was a total Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan when that series originally aired I sort of made a rule that I would watch any movie that Sarah Michelle Gellar appeared in if the opportunity presented itself.  Sometimes adhering to this rule was cause for a pleasant surprise---Cruel Intentions.  Sometimes it was an exercise in tedium---Simply Irresistible.  Sometimes I wish I had never made this rule---Scooby Doo.  And sometimes sticking to this rule was cause for me to cower in terror.

The Grudge happened to premiere on regular cable (TNT) this weekend so I figured I might as well watch it.  HOLY CRAP is that movie scary!!!  I was forced to turn on all the lights in the room, occasionally mute certain (all) frightening sequences, and watch the entire movie in special widescreen (meaning between my fingers).  Even with all that unmanly display of wimpy-ness, I was still totally spooked.  And too prove that I’m not a total coward; I did watch both Ring movies without any problems.  This movie was just uniquely freaky to me.  And I think The Grudge 2 just came out on DVD---time to make a rule change I think.

Thanks for the heads up, SIA. I don't like scary movies, and I couldn't possibly care less if that makes me a wimp! lol

No kidding!   *Little story*  I drove up to Kansas City to visit my cousin (it's about a 6 hour drive or so...).  We went and ate a wonderful dinner and then decided to go to a movie.  Bad idea.  Guess what we watched.  And then guess who had to drive 6 hours, in the middle of the night, all alone, on creepy, deserted 2-lane Kansas roads to get back home....Not my smartest move ever.  I was so freaked out and paranoid the whole drive back.  Smile [:)]

Plus, after I watch horror movies, I get really freaked out by the backseat of my car.  I'm not kidding.  I know that sounds looney-bin crazy, but it's true.  I can check it and check it and check it some more, but no matter how many times I've checked it and reassured myself that it is indeed empty, if I'm driving, I always have a nervous eye on my rearview mirror, sure that SOMETHING is lurking in the darkness and just waiting until I'm off-guard....

Awwww, you poor thing!  I know how you feel...you sound like me!  Except that besides watching from between my fingers, I'd also be bawling my head off.  (And if THAT's not "unmanly wimpy-ness" then who knows what is!  No, no, I am not a man.  Well, I am "The Man" Wink [;)] and sometimes I act more like a guy than a girl, but not when it comes to scary movies.)

    Sam I am. wrote:

I guess that makes me a total coward then.  Crying [:'(] <---  That is what I did through the ENTIRE movie "The Ring" all 3 times I watched it!  (Normally, especially with horror movies, I'm okay when watching a movie the second time....NOT that one though!)

And I guess that makes me even MORE of a coward that I cry EVERY SINGLE FREAKIN TIME the 30-second preview for "The Ring 2" comes on TV......I shudder to think of what would happen to me if I were to watch the whole movie...
