    REPOST: Insights on Threshold

    Threshold (Legends 2)

    So who's read this?

    Valecynos 08-25-2005, 11:32 AM

If you haven't read this story, turn back now! There be spoilers ahead!

I finished it a couple of days ago. I really liked it. For a while I thought that there might be a link between Hector and Meridion (though I can't really say what since this is only a Threshold forum), but at the end, there is no way I could have been right. I wonder if we will ever see some of these characters again, you know, if Elizabeth does any prequels. I was particularly intrigued by the woman and child, and by Cantha. Somehow, I get the feeling they are connected to other characters in SoA.

My question though, is when Jarmon tackled Brann into the Vault, did he himself lose his own eternity? I mean, surely he died, right? So did his soul get lost in the Void, or did he go on to the Afterlife?  And what of Hector's baby?  The fact that the child is named Elsynore must bear some sort of significance later on. So far, Elizabeth hasn't put anything down in her writing that would be considered frivolous, and having named the child seems important, so I wonder when she'll come up again. Or maybe she has and I've forgotten it? And then there's Sevirym, who was sent on the last boat, plus the other people who left with him.

I tell you, this left many more questions and didn't answer any! I love/hate that!

Wasn't it great?  EH did such a fantastic job with that story.

I think Jarmon did lose his afterlife by tackling Brann into the Vault, which is what made it so truly heroic.  So many unsung heroes forgotten by those later in on history.

And I'm not sure about the baby, but we do see Hector's wife later on, the widow whose death Ashe witnessed as a child, the lady who willed herself to death because her heart had been broken for so long.

Anwyn, any chance that you saved the threads from our discussion of Threshold right after its release, with EH's input?  I'll look around my computer and see if I have them saved anywhere.  I remember EH really dropped a bomb in there and left a lot of rippling implications that not a lot of members were able to share, since few had read the short story at that time.

I'm not sure whether to post this because this is a Threshold board, but just in case if you don't want to know about any big spoilers, here's a warning to turn back immediately!

    Spoilers!!!!!!

If a F'dor was to possess someone who was able to breathe underwater, would they immediately be able to open the vault once they got to it? I mean, Hector dropped the key just a few feet away from the opening. If Hector was incased in minerals and made into a statue, shouldn't have MacQuieth  been able to find him?

    Re: So who's read this?

    Anwyn 08-27-2005, 4:06 PM

*No such luck on my end, but I'll check with Ely*

As for finding Hector and the key.... Well, imagine even if MacQuieth found the incinerated/plaster mummy remains of his son, it likely wouldn't be very recognizable to him. At best, maybe he could find some discernable trinket or something that he wore on his person, and for some reason, was not as exposed to be melted in the heat, but I doubt it.

Secondly, with the upheaval of the island, you got some immense land masses moving, I doubt the ocean floor would have remained clear of debris enough to find the key.

My theory is that he and the key are buried under tons of rubble from the island's upheaval, still as inaccessible as ever.

    Valecynos 08-30-2005, 11:41 PM

Yeah, Rhonwyn. I remembered about his widow as soon as I read her name. And, without giving too much away from other books, wasn't one of the main male characters (in the trilogy) related to Hector, and cousins with his children? I mean, we know that that character is related to McQuieth, so why wasn't the cousin ever mentioned? Did you follow that, or was I a bit too vague?

I'd have to agree with Anwyn. It would seem that the door to the vault and the key are lost now. I just can't see anyone being able to find them.

Just went through my stuff... I have 4 threads from Threshold, but none of them have anything of substance in them. I bet the good one was archived before I got to it.

    Re: So who's read this?

    Rhonwyn 08-31-2005, 10:58 AM
Yeah, I'm having a hard time finding anything on my computer because last week we had a bad storm go through that kept knocking out the power.  My second hard drive where all my older stuff was saved decided to kick the bucket.

Erm...Hopefully this won't be a spoiler to anyone who hasn't read all of the released SoA,  but...

Val, you happened to be right Meridion and Hector are related...even if it is distantly...

Hector > MacQuieth's son> aforementioned main male character being of MacQuieth's line coughGwydioncough> Meridion being the offspring of aformentioned main male character coughGwydioncough

As I said hopefully this isn't a spoiler...and umm if it is, then I'm sorry

If you're concerned about spoilers then post on the Symphony board.

However, at this point in the game there can be no spoilers here. This is the latest material to be released. So you can talk about anything that was release prior to Threshold.

When "The Assassin King" or the Ven Polypheme books are released that mateial will be off limits for this board.

After reading this I was depressed for a week. LOL

After I read this I couldn't go to sleep.  Reading it caused me to become tense and anxious, but that's how I know for sure that it was great!

    Re: REPOST: Insights on Threshold

I'm also pretty sure that not only can Threshold be found in Legends II by Robert Silverberg but also Legends II: New Short Novels by the Masters of Modern Fantasy by Raymond E. Feist, Robert Silverberg, Elizabeth Haydon, ect... What got me is why in the world did they make two versions of these? Huh? [:^)]

    Re: REPOST: Insights on Threshold

I could be wrong, but I think it had to do with the hardcover versus paperback editions of the same book.  I believe the paperback was issued in two volumes due to its size, though I don't remember for certain.Smile [:)]

    Re: REPOST: Insights on Threshold

You are correct, Krinsel. Originally Legends II was of course published in hardcover in one complete volume. However, when it was published in paperback, they split it into two volumes and named one Legends II: Dragon, Sword, and King; the other was Legends II: Shadows, Gods, and Demons. I seem to remember the question being asked of Elizabeth as to why that was (in fact, I might have been the one to ask way back when I was still Dragonlover) and I seem to remember it being about how large it was and how expensive it would be for the consumer if they didn't break it up. I myself only have Dragon, Sword, and King, since it was the one with Threshold in it.

To answer your question, Mri Nuin, they are in fact the same books. One's just in one volume and the other is part of the two volume set.

    Re: REPOST: Insights on Threshold

You might be able to find the hardcover edition in a bargain rack at the bookstore if you want the complete collection.  About a year ago, I was doing some shopping at B&N, and I picked up a hardcover copy of Threshold for $5.99 - all in all, a great deal! Smile [:)]

    Re: REPOST: Insights on Threshold

I guess ill have to fish around the Library a bit or have them order it in. I don't know if I want to buy it, I already have enough books right now, I just want to read the Threshold story.

    Re: REPOST: Insights on Threshold

I gained my copy of the short story through "nefarious" means, so I don't Legends II at all. But I don't know if I still have the copy of the story or not. I might buy the paperback of it. It's been a while since I read it. I might re-read it before I re-read Requiem, Elegy, and TAK, since it sort of a bridge of the stories.

    Re: REPOST: Insights on Threshold

Wow! Threshold was amazing! Big Smile [:D]

I liked how King Vandemere came into the story and "showed," Hector through the history of the Ages all the way back to how the world formed. Now back to reading The Dragon's Lair! Big Smile [:D]
