Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

The second friend in three weeks has thanked me for turning them onto the SoA universe. Smile [:)]  I calmly remarked that I've gotten many people hooked on the series and they responded with "You must be a big fan to want others to read it."

So...It made me think of ALL the people I had gotten to read it (by lending the books or buying them as gifts).  So far, I've gotten a dozen acquaintances, 5 close friends, and 3 families-including my mom- members to read the books.  A few of my male friends were skeptical at first.  They thought it was another one of those romance-centered fantasy books that most females tend to write...the kind with no action or gore or other scenes that would make it an awesome action movie (not that every guy is like that, obviously there are some on this board right now Wink [;)]).  I sent them a few paragraphs of the more action-packed scenes and they relectantly agreed.  Now, they're avid readers (and one is already up to Assassin King!).

Who have you cauldronites turn on to the books?

Now I just need to get them to come onto the boards. lol

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

I don't have too many, but I did get a co-worker, one of my best friends (and GS co-leader), and her sister to read them. They all loved them, naturally. None of them are "computer people", as they put it, although the co-worker does get on the computer more often than the other two. Her husband is in our WoW guild. I doubt to see any of them on here though, no matter how many times I've pestered them about it. Wink [;)]

I keep meaning to give the books to one of my brothers, and maybe my SIL. I'm not sure what she reads, but I know one of her all time faves is the Narnia series.  Bro loved The Dark Tower, and was after me for awhile to read it. Of all my siblings, he's the only one who might like reading fantasy. My sister says she doesn't like fantasy, but she loves Harry Potter, which I would consider fantasy. My dad gave me the books, so I don't need to convience him to read them, and my mom does not like fantasy books at all. My other best friend isn't (gasp! Surprise [:O]) a reader.

I have turned a lot of my online friends onto it. I turned  my ex-boyfriend's uncle onto it, a few of my friends who in turn have turned my other friends onto it. Also, my step-dad, who has now spread the series all through his co-workers and boss. Along with my cousins who have spread it to all the people they know.

Hmm... my grandmother, my mum and my brother. My boyfriend too; he loved Rhapsody. However I've also introduced him to George Martin so it might be a long time until he reads Prophecy and he is a very slow reader. Big Smile [:D] That's about it really, my best friend isn't a much of a reader either and the rest don't really share my fantasy interests - and the one that does is not very good at returning things.

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

*gasp* How can some people not like to read!  Seriously though Val and D, for people like that, I like to copy a piece from the book (particularly something action-filled) and give it to them.  It works sometimes.  They get so into the action, they need to see what happens next, then you go "No, no, no! You must read the book to find out."  My brother wasn't much of a reader but after we'd played Halo and Halo 2 (a billion times), I purchased the first three books, typed out some of the scenes and gave it to him.  He was instantly hooked and read all three! (of course he's a big Halo fan too).  Now if I could only get him to read the SoA series.  Since me and mom BOTH like it, that might scare him away from it.

And SMO, it sounds like you have spread it around like a virus.  Except without the coughing and fever. o.O

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

I recommend this series to anyone who wants to talk about books.  (Case in point:  Conrad from the Tube in London..haha)  However, my problem is that no one ever lets me know whether they actually read the books or I have no idea who they are/how to contact them to see if they read it!  *sad*

However, I did loan my copy of Rhapsody to one of my best friends "M", and she read it, loved it, and is saving up to buy the rest of the series.  lol

No, my friend does read some books WOD, but she isn't a dedicated reader; just the odd thriller here and there. Big Smile [:D]

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

And my friend has a very hard time with reading comprehension. She does want to read, but she gets frustrated when she has to stop and start, which she does all the time to handle the 2 kids, husband, 3 dogs, 20 lizards (not kidding Surprise [:O]) elderly father with dementia, 2 different businesses, and countless other people who try to suck away her time. Add to that the problem with understanding what she reads so that she has to reread it over and over, and well, she just doesn't even try anymore. Sad [:(] She is working on telling people no and not multi-tasking at the moment, and doing a fine job of it too! I'm proud of her! I had to tell her that she could always, always tell me she couldn't do something without fearing that I would be upset in the least.

Now, if I can find books on CD for her, she listens to it and enjoys it a lot while she's driving. I just wish SoA was on CD. I'd buy it just for her.

I have tried over and over to get her here just to see Duchess', and everyone else's, Poser/Daz art. She's a fairy fanatic! Wink [;)]

I do know what you mean though by "How can anyone not like to read?!" I have often wondered that too, until I met my friend, Obizzybee.

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

My brother was the one who got me interested in the books, because he talked about how awesome The Brother was.  So I had to read it.
I've got 1.5 people to read it  :)  my cousin, who reads a lot of fantasy, and her friend, who also reads fantasy.  My cousin has read all of them and loved them; she was going to stop reading Rhapsody at long detailed description part.  I wasn't gonna let her toss them, so I remember that I read that passage to her while she cleaned her room.  She didn't have a lot of trouble after that. Wink [;)]
But, her best friend only read the first 2!  She told me she couldn't get through Destiny!! !!  That's the best one!  So I'm still working on getting her to finish reading all of them.
But, I don't know a lot of people who read fantasy.  This is a little off topic, but doesn't it bug you how people don't take fantasy seriously as a genre of literature?  It makes me really irritated.

I think it gets equated with "romance novel"...which are two completely separate genres.  Probably because there are beautiful/handsome/sexy creatures on the front of fantasy books....but while fantasy can include graphic aspects of the "romance novel", it's also SOOOOO much more!

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

That is true, but even people who read the romance genre scorn fantasy books.  Seriously, I know some real literary garbage that people hail as "one of the greatest books of the nation" that doesn't hold a candle to fantasy.

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

My husband got me to read the books.  He had found a copy of Destiny on the bus, and then read all of them and loved them.  I have gotten 3 people to say they would start reading them, but the problem is that they are all sharing my only copies of the books.  And I want to re-read them!  I think I need to get new copies anyway, mine are getting pretty worn!
MH: I must confess that I know what you mean, because I was one of those people.  When my husband first wanted me to read Rhapsody, told him I wasn't going to waste my time.  I eventually gave in, and have fallen in love!  And not just with the SoA, but other fantasy books as well.  I am a changed woman!

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

No one I know will read them. Sad [:(]

This is why I am so dependent on the Cauldron to share my feelings with about the books.

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

I've tried to get my sister to read them, but although she has read Harry Potter and LotR, she doesn't like fantasy or sci-fi.
I've always loved fantasy books and sci-if.  When I was very little, before I could read by myself, my mom used to read  books like The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, A Wrinkle in Time and The Borrowers to me and my siblings.

Nobody listens to me! I try too tell my siblings how good they are but they don't think my opinion counts.

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

I got three of my friends so far to read them, and gave my old paperback copies to my younger brother so one day he might read them. One of my friend's though gave-up on the books after Prophecy, all because she didn't like Rhapsody. Oh well.

It's pretty sad, but my tally is still only 1.5...a whole year later, and still haven't got my friend to finish Destiny. But I still haven't finished Magician (which she just insists I must read), so I guess we're even.

Magician? Do you mean Magician: Apprentice/Master by Raymond E. Feist?

Re: Let's See How Big of a Fan You Are...

Good books, btw. Although not my favorite. One of my friend's convinced me to try reading them, bought them for me and than I placed them on my shelf and let them sit for a year or two before I fianlly picked them up and read them. Big Smile [:D]
