The Cauldron

Night was a very sad, but a very good book. Its something that stays in your mind forever.

I actually read that book three times in a row for a reading project we were assigned because it was that good.

Anyway, I'm just about done with Rhapsody, and just itching to get to pickup Prophecy, Child of the Earth.

This wasn't Night by Elie Wiesel. I read that a year or so ago, whenever it was chosen by  Oprah as her book club selection. It was a fantastic book. It really is a tale that stays with you, particularly because you know that it was actually true. I thought I bought that one, but I can't seem to remember where it is. Anyway, this is a novel he wrote, called The Oath, but it was because of Night that I wanted this one. I am interested is seeing how he is with fiction.

I started and finished Mark Alpert's debut novel, Final Theory, (another review here) within a day.  It totally took me in for a great ride, though some of the situations were of the fantasical sort. 

If you like science out of the classroom, this could be a book for you.  Some complex theories are explained in everyday language with visual prompts to boot, all wrapped up in a fast paced story with historical significance.

Ah, Night. That book was pretty depressing; I stopped reading at the middle because it was putting a damper on my quality of life.

Is New Moon one of those Twilight books? And what are the Twilight books? I've been hearing all about lately, and I still don't know what they are. Something about vampires, right?

Yeah. Vampire/human love story with complications. If you're gonna read it, you should do it before the movie comes out, 'cause they changed stuff around a bit.

Hmmm, I don't know. I like some vampire stuff, but I'm not crazy about the idea, especially if it's a love story. I remember now...my cousin actually recommended the books to me, but it didn't sound like the books would be for me, so I didn't read them and forgot about them....until now. Twilight must have gained a lot of popularity since that time.

I've read all the books except Breaking Dawn, which is coming out soon. The books are good, I read them non-stop when I first get them, but than they just sit on my shelf and collect dust. I think ill give my copies away eventually, I don't think ill be able to re-read them again...

The two main characters are Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, one is a girl who moved to Forks in Washington (where its rarely sunny and rains a great deal) where she meets the "mysterious but popular/beautiful," Edward Cullen and his entire Vampire family who don't like to suck the blood of humans, but rather hunt animals instead. The whole series is about two things, one is Bella wanting to become a vampire so she can be with Edward for eternity, the second is vampires hunting Bella down because they ether want revenge, or simply don't want her to become a vampire or knowing they exist. I'm not too big on the whole vampire thing ether.

Anyway, I've been dibating on if I should re-read my favorite science ficiton novel The Faded Sun trilogy by C.J.Cherryh. But than I want to get to the library this weekend and see if they have Legends II there so I can finally read Threshold, I also want to broaden my horizon on fantasy novels a bit by trying out The Wayfarer Redemption series by Sara Douglass or George.R.R.Martin's popular Song of Ice and Fire series. Is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series any good? I also want to try reading Terry Goodkind's Wizard's First Rule.

I don't know about the Wheel of Time, but I can comment intelligently on Wayfarer Redemption. I love the first three books (Wayfarer Redemption a.k.a. Battleaxe, Enchanter, and Starman). I waited forever for the next trilogy to come out (Sinner, Pilgrim, and Crusader). Sinner wasn't bad (in my opinion), but I hated...I repeat... hated Pilgrim. I hated what she did with the characters and where she went with the story. I hated it so much that I didn't even read Crusader and I haven't lost any sleep over it. Now, don't let my abhorrence sully your own opinion of the books, though. You might like the last three a lot.

I've never read those. Obviously you think they are good, since it is your favorite trilogy. Maybe I'll check them out on Amazon.

I'm on Shon'jir right now in The Faded Sun trilogy by C.J.Cherryh. But I went to the Library today and picked-up Preludes Volume Three, Brother's Majere by Kevin Stein to brush-up on Dragonlance, and on my favorite character from the series, Raistlin Majere. I never read this book, and have read every other material on the mage (from Dragonlance Chronicles my Mercedes Weis and Tracy Hickman, to Dragonlance Legends. Also Soulforge and Brother's in Arms.)

I also had them order in Legend II so I can finally read Threshold!

I still haven't received my Hardcover copy of Destiny from Amazon.com yet, it might be a while if that person ships it back and than the person I originally ordered it from ships it back to me. I really hope I receive it eventually.

I got an email from Overstock that my copy of The Dragon's Lair was shipped via US mail yesterday!!!

I'm also reconnecting with Douglas Adams.  I swiped my daughter's "fancy" (pleather cover with gold binding ) edition of the entire Hitchhiker's Guide books.  I also got a new paperback copy of his The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul  and am working on that one as well.

I am currently (very slowly--because there's only so much of "long, drawn-out battles with the Romans" scenes that I can get through in one day, lol.) reading Priestess of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley...

I also have a huge pile of books on my floor now because I was doing a book exchange with my friends.

Twilight's 3rd sequel comes out August 2nd! Yay!

I'm reading Howl's Moving Castle at the moment, and I am enjoying it a lot. It's similar to the movie, but the movie does deviate from it somewhat.

Is that the one that was co-authored by Diana Paxson, EL?  I tried that one myself a few years back, but couldn't find the flow of it as I did with the other Bradley Avalon books.  It started off as a good story, though. 

I went to Borders a few weeks ago and went a little crazy on their "generic" Classics series, getting The Divine Comedy, Sense and Sensibility, The Time Machine/War of the Worlds, The Art of War and The Bhagavad Gita.  I'm reading both the Gita and The Divine Comedy right now - not bad for nicely bound editions priced at about $5.99 each.  I couldn't resist!

Yeah...I much preferred the ones only by MZB. (aka The Mists of Avalon, The Forest House). I think there's just less new material when Paxson cuts in...that's basically when the long-and-drawn-out reincarnation stuff was written. I'm guessing it was sort of a way out from making a new story for characters, when they could just do what they did in "past lives". Lol.

That's why I'm taking so long reading this book

Hmm. I had an urge to read The Time Machine, because it sounded interesting (and unexpected for the time period when written), however, I didn't have enough time to read it before it was due back at the library...

At the moment I'm reading The Orc King by R.A.Salvatore. I have read some of his Drizzt books, starting with the first two trilogies (The Dark Elf and The Icewind Dale) skipped far ahead to his Hunter's Blade Trilogy (which really wasn't that enjoyable as I thought it was going to be) and am now reading Transitions, which I hope will finally end the Drizzt books once and full all. Not that I dislike them, but I believe that Salvatore needs to give the series a nice, clean end. The only books of this series I haven't read thus far, are as followed below:

The Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, Passage to Dawn, The Silent Blade, The Spine of the World and Sea of Swords.

I really need to read the other books of The Legend of Drizzt series before I read The Pirate King, which is the second book of Transitions. But for now, Ill just finish this book, eventually finish re-reading Shon'jir by C.J.Cherryh (The second book of The Faded Sun trilogy) and try to finish reading some of the other neglected books on my bookshelf.

I am finally finished with Priestess of Avalon (Hmm. Apparently, the Roman emperor Constantine killed his own son and wife...I did not know that), so continued on yesterday to read random books such as The Darwin Awards: Evolution In Action and a really juvenile book called The Frog Princess, because I was developing a headache and could not read anything with a real plot.

Currently reading (slowly) an anthology of short stories called Wizards.
