I am now reading Heaven's Net is Wide, a books from the series called Tales of the Otori, by Lian Hearn. This books is a prequel to the first book Across the Nightingale Floor. It is sort of a fantasy alternate universe of feudalistic Japan. They are very good books.

I decided to try to read down some of the huge stack of books that I haven't gotten to in a while, so I am currently reading Lisey's Story by Stephen King. I think I've had that book for over a year now. LOL!

I also started reading The Man in the Iron Mask by Alexandre Dumas, and while I usually do not like to have more than one book at a time running, I may try to read them both to hopefully make it through the stack faster.

I stopped reading the short stories, and moved on to The Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl, which I finished this morning. I'm now reading The Spell Book of Listen Taylor by Jaclyn Moriarty, and it's rather engrossing. I'm not sure why.

Hey Mri Niun! I thought of you today. I was at an used bookstore, called John K. King, and I saw a hardcover of the first book (Kesrith) of that Faded sun trilogy you love so much. The book looked like one of the first editions, from the 70's. What do you think of that? I didn't get it though. I almost did, but I haven't made up my mind if I want to read it yet (so I didn't want to spend money on it).

    Re: Books 'n Such

Hey madhatter, thats cool. But you can find a nicer deal, (its in paperback though) with all three books in it. Take a peek at it and see if you still want to buy it or not, totally up to you (or visit your local library Big Smile [:D]):

    http://www.amazon.com/Faded-Sun-Trilogy-Kesrith-Shonjir/dp/0886778697/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217718612&sr=1-1

Actually re-reading Kutath right now. There is also a First Edition Hardcover right from the 70s in my local Library. I looked at it and wanted to steal it! Stick out tongue [:P]

I got a messege from the lady who accidently sent my Hardcover Destiny book I ordered from www.amazon.com to another person a couple of days ago, who still has not recieved my Destiny book back. She has informed me, once again, that as soon as she gets it back from the lady (who in turn has confirmed that she will return it) will send it to me. Confused [*-)]

I am currently reading Breaking Dawn, the newest Twilight book. I enjoyed the first three books, but they arn't something I think I will read over and over. This forth book is different. It is more complex then the others and a bit more grown up. The books are told from Bella's point of view, but for about 8 chapters her friend Jake takes over the story. I didn't expect this at all and I enjoyed the change, for a bit. I was happy when It got back to Bella.

I am really looking forward to the last 200 pages, stuff like eating and going to work are just getting in my way now. Wink [;)]

    Re: Books 'n Such

I ordered a book from the UK and it arrived today! The Monsters and the Critics, by J.R.R. Tolkien. YAy! I am a complete Tolkien nerd, and I am very excited. Big Smile [:D] I am getting into a Tolkien frenzy again, which happens at least once a year. That means it's time to re-read the Lord of the Rings and watch the movies. I love the LotR movies, but they are so long. To watch all three of them is like reading a book in itself, at least in the time it takes. Anyway, Monsters is a book of essays and lectures done by Tolkien in his lifetime, and one of them is about inventing languages, and it's got some Elvish texts in there too. It's perfect (for people who like that kind of stuff).

Just glancing through The Dragon's Lair book today to collect terms for The Ven Polypheme Dictionary. And I might use the money I wanted to buy Breaking Dawn with for a pad for the seat of my car... ugh.

    Re: Books 'n Such

Today I decided to read some of Poe's stories I haven't gotten to yet. So far I have only read of his works: The Raven, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Man in the Crowd, A Tall-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red Death, Eldorado, and The Bells. Today I read The Black Cat and am currently reading The Gold-Bug.

A while back I had to pick-up and read/write a report on a literary author and decided to try Poe. I found a very ancient copy of Young Edgar Allan Poe in the Library and read it. I don't know why, but something about Poe's writing and stories/poems are awesome! And although I hate horror movies and the like, as well as anything to do with voodoo or witchcraft (which my Grandmother is fond of I think), I nevertheless have grown to love every short story, essay or poem he has written. My favorite so far would have to be ether The Man in the Crowd or The Pit and the Pendulum. Big Smile [:D]

    Re: Books 'n Such

(In response to the very old and very copious replies about Sara Douglass) I read the Wayfarer Redemption quite a long time ago and can't remember anything besides Yr, Icarii, Axis, Azure, and Faraday. That's all. I was actually planning to re-read it, though. After that it's LotR, then all the unread or forgotten books in my bookcase.

After that, I don't know what I'm going to read. I have several books out of the library on Ancient Egypt, and one more coming in that I'm going to study. Whit by Iain Banks is a book I'm going to read soon (within next month or so) and so I'll come back with feedback on it later.

Also have the second book in Ian Irvine's series, Curse on the Chosen, coming in, but it's been taking forever to come in. I think I've had in on hold since February... and I don't think I'll have it read anytime soon. But I liked the first book in that series, Fate of the Fallen.

So after all those readings are done, what other books should I read? Any specifics to suggest?

Well, what kind of books do you read? What books have you read?

    -

I am currently rereading...slowly...a book called Moloka'i, about a girl in the leper colony on the island of the same name in Hawaii. I'm not sure if I'll finish rereading it, because school's taking up basically all of my time...

Pretty much any fantasy I can can get my hands on. Big Smile [:D] Or any other interesting fiction; not so much sci-fi. I'm big on the Forgotten Realms but only because I don't really know of many non-major series books that are any good, but if I knew of them I would definitely read them (which is why I asked).

There's too many separate books, so I'll only do series that I remember. And my memory's awful.
R.A. Salvatore - Legend of Drizzt, the Demon Wars, the Sellswords, Cleric Quintet, War of the Spider Queen
Tanya Huff - The Blood Books
Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman - Dragonlance books
Margaret Weis - The Dark Disciple
Eric Nylund (and others) - Halo books
*Runs to room to remember more*
    Stan Nicholls - The Dreamtime
Richard Baker - The Last Mythal
Keith Baker - The Dreaming Dark
Sara Douglas - The Wayfarer Redemption
Elizabeth Moon - <Insert name here> (I forgot the name of the series... it had Rules of Engagement in it, though...)

And of course, LotR, SoA, lots of other series that I didn't like enough to remember (aka. buy), and infinite odds-and-ends non-series books. I didn't mention series that aren't finished but I am waiting for the next ones to be written (Journals of Ven Polypheme, the Song of the Tears, the Watercourse Trilogy) or I haven't finished yet (the Wheel of Time).
I'm still reading Alamut by Vladimir Bartol currently. It's sooo good; I'm trying to savour it. But my favourite character just died. Sad [:(] But I still love it. I find the history in it fascinating and the storyline and writing in it are ceaselessly brilliant, though the beginning isn't so great (courtesy of the translator, or the author weeding out people early on. It gets good, fast.) Give it two or three more days and I should be finished it.

At the moment I'm reading The Catcher in the Rye (very depressing book to me, but I have to read it for school) and The Yearling by Rawling. The Yearling is one of my favorite classics (besides White Fang by Jack London). Big Smile [:D]

    Re: Books 'n Such

I just finished reading Oliver Twist for English class. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I'm not a great fan of Dickens; I was permanently scarred by his writing when I was forced to read Great Expectations in ninth grade. It was even abridged, and I still couldn't handle it. But Oliver Twist was not abridged, and I still managed to not only finish it (a great accomplishment for me when it comes to required reading), but I actually managed to like it. Of course, I don't see myself ever reading it again, but I can say that I have read at least one Dickens book without suicidal tendencies. It looks hopeless right now for getting some of my own reading done, but that's what I get for being a college student. I think "they" are trying to "broaden my horizons." But I never react well to forced change or forced perspectives. I am quite capable of broadening my own horizons, thank you very much, in my own way and time. Maybe I'm far too independent or stubborn for my own good. ;)

    Re: Books 'n Such

Aww...you might want to try another Dickens' book now that you've got through Oliver Twist, MH.  Now that you're in the "flow" of his writing style, you will probably find it easier to fall into the storytelling.  I was the same way with Mark Twain and several writers for my Victorian Literature class - they totally frustrated me at first, then I ended up really enjoying their individual styles.  Smile [:)]

Last night I finished Anne Tyler's Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant, which was a good book and very fast read for me (I was able to finish it in the flights up and back "home" (Mom's) for a quick visit).  Smile [:)]
